Supervised Instruction Permit Information
Supervised Instruction Permits (SIP) allow anyone 14 1/2 and under 17 years of age to attend any public school or private driver’s training program. The permit expires 5 days after the permit holder’s 18th birthday. The permit expiration for people 17 ½ years of age and older is 6 months (180 days). While you are enrolled in a Drivers Training program, the SIP is valid only to operate a vehicle with a driver’s training instructor. When you have successfully completed a Drivers Training program and the instructor has given you the SIP, you will be eligible to begin the SIP period required by Idaho’s Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) program, which is 6 Months.
Each Student is required to purchase a driving permit from the DMV before their first driving lesson. A Parent or Guardian must accompany the Student to the DMV and bring the following documents in order to purchase the teen permit.
- Certified Original Birth Certificates (available from the Bureau of Vital Statistics)
- Acceptable Photo Identification (school id, passport, yearbook must have name and photo)
- Social Security Card or Number for verification
- Proof of Idaho Residency (2 Forms, ie: water bill, electric bill, cell phone bill, etc)
- Liability Signer (if under 18) – must be birth parent or court-ordered guardian
- Verification of School Compliance (VOC) (if under 18) Letter from High School or Middle School student is attending
- Acceptable Lawful Presence Documents (if applicable)
- Pay a fee of $21.50 to the DMV
Driver Training/Supervised Instruction Permits may be issued to applicants 14 ½ years of age and older.
Applicants who are 17 years of age or older may take driver’s training with either the Driver Training/Supervised Instruction Permit or with the Class D Instruction Permit. Driver Training Permits are not renewable.
The knowledge test must be passed before a Class D Instruction Permit can be issued. Permits can be purchased at any county driver’s license office in Idaho. The fees are non-refundable.
